Shire Race 2017
Showerking Flying Feathers Shire Horse Amateur Stakes 2017 at Chelmsford City Racecourse with Hurst Green Shires
Daisy Makes it a Double in Epic Mother/Son Finish
The closest of photo finishes - Jack Callister beats Mum Marie Callister by a nose. Also a great achievement for Caroline Eagle, coming in third here but owner of both her mount, Ollie, and Jacks ride Daisy, who becomes the first of our competitors to win the Flying Feathers race twice having triumphed in 2016 as well.
Special mention though of Hurst Green Shires racing veteran Jack just pipped to the line. He's the only shire to have been in every one of our annual races. He's been placed every time, winning in 2015 under the legendary double national winning jockey Leighton Aspell and is a firm favourite here at Showerking Towers. He loves this race, pranced like a two year old on his way to the start yesterday and is the picture of health at 14 years young. Although a gelding now, he was a premium stallion in his youth and is the father of HGS magnificent stallion Hercules.
With many thanks to all the riders who took part, providing their time, and in some cases their horses, to put on a great show for the crowd. To Heather & Hannah Hobin, Ali Citroen (all the way from Paris!), Yard Manager Cheryl Daly and Erin Courtman - we salute you and your very professional riding. Our only casualty was one shoe that went flying with the feathers 🙂
Our gratitude to Georgie Thorogood and the team at Chelmsford City Racecourse, our first time hosts for this event. What a super friendly course, the staff couldn't do enough for us and we had a lovely time with delicious food. Thoroughly recommended for a family day out.
And the final thanks to HGS legend Jacquie Gardiner without whom none of this would be possible. Jax passion for this breed and desire to share them with the world is what keeps us doing these events in the hope that the magnificent Shire will have a place and role in the 21st century and on into the next.
Cheers everybody! We'll see you next year!
